5 Interview Tips to Make a Great First Impression

Do you have an interview coming up? Interviews can be stressful, but being prepared ahead of time is the best way to handle them with confidence. And part of being prepared is knowing how to make a great first impression, which ultimately increases your chances of getting a second interview and landing the job. Here are some quick interview tips on how to make a great first impression:

1) Don’t be late.

It’s the simplest way to botch an interview before it’s even started – showing up late. Plan things out ahead of time to ensure you make it to the interview on time, even if it’s a virtual one and all you have to do is sit down in front of your computer. Double- and triple-check what time the interview is (don’t forget to factor in different time zones for virtual interviews!) to make sure you don’t miss it and leave extra time in case of technical difficulties

2) Look the part.

Depending on the type of job you’re interviewing for, you may or may not need to dress up formally. But in almost any interview setting, looking your best is a good practice. You don’t have to wear a three-piece suit or a fancy dress, but wearing something that makes you feel confident and fits in with the image of the company you’re interviewing with is a good idea. It just never hurts to look professional and put together when you’re trying to make a good impression. And remember that it’s not just about clothes – make sure you’re well-groomed, too.

3) Know who you’re meeting.

One of the little mistakes that novice interviewees make is not knowing who they’ll be meeting for the interview. You should be able to find out who the hiring manager or department head you’ll be meeting with is. Remember their name and use it when you first meet this person (a firm handshake doesn’t hurt, either). It shows you’re taking the interview seriously, and that you’ve taken the time to think about the conversation you’re about to have.

4) Consider your body language.

Sit up straight with your shoulders back; this helps you project an air of confidence, even if you’re nervous. Don’t tap your foot or drum your fingers(if you are feeling anxious, try wiggling your toes to get that movement in without being distracting). Show that you are actively listening to the person you’re talking to, whether that's maintaining natural eye contact or nodding to show you understand. Remembering tips like these really make a difference when you’re meeting someone for the first time.

5) Come prepared with questions.

The hiring manager will surely ask you if you have any questions as the interview is wrapping up. If you say “no,” it will look like you’re not invested. Come prepared with at least a few questions to wrap up the interview with. You’ll not only receive more information than you would have had otherwise, you’ll demonstrate that you’re truly interested in the position and the company. Better yet, ask questions during the main interview if they feel natural. It will make the interview more conversational and help you learn more about the company culture in the process.
